New Tires for Silverado Truck. Best Value and Very Expensive. Deals at NTB

The 2005 Chevy Silverado truck tires I just bought at NTB were not cheap. I did find a pretty good deal since NTB had a buy one, get one free offer for Cooper Discoverer LSX tires. I had to purchase the premium installation/roadside assistance package to qualify, but it still was cheaper than their most inexpensive tire would have been. Four Cooper tires (245-70-17) came to be $650 out the door.
The roadside assistance is free for three years and includes changing spare, jump start, towing, fluid delivery, and more. I also get free alignments for one years. I looked at General tires (cheaper), Yokohama tires, Nitto, Firestone, and Goodyear. The price of tires for Chevrolet Silverado trucks are not cheap so look for a bargain deal.

Anyone who doesn't get a thrill from watching these huge horses thunder around the track is missing out on a great event. My prediction is "Stay Thirsty". He is at 15-1 odds as of Saturday morning. I like gates 2-5 and Stay Thirsty is the best horse running from one of those gates. Churchill Downs is an absolutely beautiful track. Are you having a Kentucky Derby Party this year? That is becoming the thing to do. I have never actually bet on the Kentucky Derby, but I understand that Vegas gets busier than normal this weekend. Where your hats proudly and get to the starting gate. And there off....

Who Killed Osama Bin Laden? Obama gets Credit. Pakistan may have helped. USA Navy Seals

Who killed Osama Bin Laden? The United States Navy Seals made the kill. The Pakistanis should have known the he was hiding out in their own backyard. The fortress that he lived in was basically a palace.
How will the U.S. stock market react to the death of Osama Bin Laden? What will happen to the price of oil & gas? President Obama needed this news to lift the spirits of the country. Where is Abbotabad? Navy SEALs killed the Al Qaeda leader in a mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan just north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The body was buried at sea. Osama Bin Laden the devil is dead!

Kill the Weeds in the Lawn, Not the Grass. How to controll Clover, dandelions, and Crab Grass.

The best way to keep your lawn weed free and green is by daily care. Spray your lawn in early spring, again in late spring, and spot spray as needed.
I use Spectracide, but the Ortho spray works great as well. I do not use Scott's brand weed and feed because it is pretty expensive compared to the generics (but Scott's is GREAT stuff). Clover is a bitch, it is extremely hard to kill. Crabgrass must be controlled before it germinates. Crab grass emerges when the soil stays at about 55F for about 5 straight days. Apply crabgrass controller before the 5 straight days of 55F (in the Midwest, generally apply about April 5th). Weeds will overtake the lawn if you do not pay attention. When the weather starts to get hot, the grass will not grow very much but the weeds will suck up all the water in the soil and take over. Choke out the weeds by developing a thick lawn. Fertilizer is the key to a great looking lawn. I buy cheap fertilizer at Lowes, Home Depot, or Menards (any hardware store/Wal-mart). I use a broadcast spreader to apply the granules. Dandelions emerge early and are easily controlled, just don't kill the flowers and shrubs. Clover will spread quickly and is hard to kill. Your yard is an indication of how proud you are of your home, take good care of it.

Best Refrigerator Value for the Money. Great Deals on a Fridge and Freezer. Don't Go Cheap.

How much are parts. Whirlpool, Amana, LG, Kenmore, GE, Samsung, Maytag, and Haier are some of the popular brands. Best Coffee Maker for the Money. Find a Great Deal and Save Money

What is the best value on a good coffee maker? Why spend $50 or more on a coffee maker when you can buy one at Wal-Mart for $15? All coffee maker can make very good coffee, but some use the pod style system to make delicious results. Keurig makes one of the most popular K-cup coffee makers.
The price depends on where you buy it. Hamilton Beach, TRU, Senseo, Mr. Coffee, and Black and Decker are some popular manufacturers. If you normally drink Folgers, don't spend a lot of money to buy an expensive machine. Do you go to Starbucks for your coffee? What is your Latte Factor according to David Bach? What Does A Government Shutdown Mean? What will Happen? Are You Ready? Obama and the Budget & Will you Get Paid?

How will a government shutdown affect you? How long will the government shutdown last?
Historically, it has lasted anywhere from three days to three weeks. Do you work in a government industry? The spending plan needs to be passed to avoid a total government shutdown and no pay for the furloughed employees. Obama will have his work cut out trying to control this mess. How will you get paid if you are a government employee? good luck! Does the military still get paid? The troops will see a delayed paycheck. Will I get a social security check? Does the IRS close? You will still have to send in your income tax return by April 18th. Federal employees will feel the crunch. Republicans and Democrats need to get past the politics and do what is best for the people. Will the FBI still function? Is police service interrupted? How about medicare? Will interest rates go up? Is the processing of Visa's and passports delayed or stopped? Who is considered a non-essential employee? Home loans will stop being processed which means the economy will continue to suffer. What will this mean to wall street? The stock market is sure to feel the effects of reduced spending. What percent of American workers work for the government? Are Museums and National Parks going to be closed. What about state parks, monuments, federal agencies, the Arch in St. Louis, etc....

Best Value in a Dishwasher with Great Features. What are Top Dishwashers to Buy, How hard to Install?

My old dishwasher was on it's last leg so it was time to look for a replacement. Our old one was over 12 years old and the soap dispenser would not open automatically. The baskets were rusting also. I wanted to find a good quality dishwasher that was highly rated and a good value for the money. After doing some online research, I decided on the Kenmore Bisque 24" Built-In Dishwasher (1526) ENERGY STAR rated that was on sale for $295.
I tend to buy most items at Sears since it is convenient and they seem to have good sales. Some of the top brands are: Bosch, Maytag, Amana, Whirlpool, LG, Miele, Frigidaire, GE, Jenn-Air, Kenmore, Kitchenaid, Electrolux, and Asko. I did not want a stainless steel exterior since it wouldn't match my kitchen and I would hate all the fingerprints that would need to cleaned daily. The old dishwasher was really easy to take out once I got the copper nut loosened on the pipe leading to the water connector. The new on was relatively easy to install since I was able to reuse all the copper connectors and the electrical cord from the old one. Give yourself a couple hours to uninstall the old and for installing the new.

Square foot gardening is a great hobby for the whole family.

Best Value Lawn Mower for the Money. The Best Deal was Right at Sears--Craftsman

I was looking for the best value lawn mower for the money. I have a medium size yard (85' x 150') and it was time to buy a new mower. My old lawn mower was a yard-man mower that I had purchased at Wal-Mart. It was on it's last leg and I was tired of all of it's little quirks.
I did some online research and it led me to Sears. The Yard-Pro Front Propelled Rear Bag Lawn Mower was a steal, on sale at $199 (regularly $349.99). The Model# 37159 is not the coolest looking mower but it packs a Kohler OHV Engine with a 22" cut. I am looking forward to using it this Spring. I would rate it as a Best Buy. My best value was the best deal I could find. EDIT-May. The Yard-Pro turned out to be a lemon. The design of the belt assembly led to grass clippings piling up into the belt pulley. This caused the belt to slow down and the engine to stop. I returned the Yard-Pro and upgraded to a Craftsman 22" 7.0 Briggs and Stratton engine. The design is much better and this mower has a variable speed lever. Much better quality but $100 more. Craftsman remains the winner in quality performance.

NCAA Basketball Tournament Final Four. March Madness History says it will be Butler Bulldogs or UCONN

Who will win the NCAA basketball March Madness? Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Butler, Ohio State, Marquette, North Carolina, Richmond, VCU, Florida State, Arizona, UCONN, BYU, Wisconsin, Florida, SDSU....Who wants to be the Champion?
Coack K has proven to be an elite coach who knows how to bring home the net. Butler Bulldogs could just do it. Does University of Connecticut have what it takes to be champion? The NCAA tournament is such a great concept, hard to believe that College Football can't relate to it. Bowl games are so 1960's.

Motorola Xoom Android Tablet PC. Googe Eating Some Apple Pie

The MOTOROLA XOOM - Android Smart Tablet is crazy good! Is it better than the Apple Ipad? The apps are the only thing that makes that a valid question. Dell Streak,Archos 101, Samsung Galaxy, and the Apple iPad are just some of Motorola's competition into this huge new market.
The laptop will finally have some sales decline as the tablet will be eating into the market share. Expect all the laptop manufactures to have their own version of the tablet very soon. Google does things right!

Best Gas Grill Value? The Kenmore Barbecue with Porcelain Cast-Iron Grates looks nice on the Patio.

What is the Best Gas Grill Value? Outdoor grilling is a sport in many suburban areas. Enjoy the Kenmore Barbecue grill:
Product Description

A 12,000 BTU side burner adds extra versatility and cooking power to this grill. Featuring 4 stainless steel burners. 650 sq. in. of cooking area with porcelain cast-iron cooking grates.

* Large 650 sq. in. cooking area
* Electronic ignition for reliable lighting
* 12,000 BTU side burner adds convenience
* Porcelain cast-iron cooking grids
* Two towel bars
* High-gloss black finish

The Kenmore gas grill is an attractive looking outdoor barbecue grill. The Stainless steel top looks great with the high-gloss black bottom. The side burner cooks fast with 12,000 BTU's. The assembly takes a few hours but is no problem even with a few beers. The top back of the grill does have a big opening that allows the heat to escape--might be an issue. To early to tell if I like it but it seems to be a very good value for the money. It is build fairly sturdy, but is not build like a Weber Grill. I prefer gas over charcoal for the speed and simplicity. I looked at Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Menards, but Sears has very good sale prices on grills. This Model# 464430111 was on sale for $199 (normally $270) and also had a $20 off internet coupon. When will they start making Craftsman Grills?

Silverado Transmission Service. How to Change/Flush the Fluid/Oil by Dropping the Pan.

My Silverado was due for a 100,000 mile transmission service so I needed to drop the pan and change the filter. I was interested to see what the bottom of the pan would have in it (shavings, etc). I bought a new filter from Autozone and some transmission fluid from Walmart.
This was the first time I ever messed with the transmission and I was a little leery. I had read that the bolts on the transmission pan might be super tight and difficult to get off. I sprayed each bolt with some perpetrating oil the night before. The bolts came off real easily. The only problem was that the gear selector/shift cable was right in the way. The pan would not com off because the bracket holding the cable was in the way. I bent it out of the way (not smart) and finagled the pan around the tail pipe. The pan was really pretty clean except for some metallic looking gunk stuck to the magnet. The filter and gasket went on easily and I put the pan back on and bolted it up. Way too easy...so I thought. I put in 4 quarts on transmission oil and started the truck up so I could use the dipstick to see how much more oil I needed (it takes 5 quarts to refill the pan). I shifted the gears (P R N D 1 2 3) then tried to shift it back up....the shift handle moved up without anything happening. WTF! I looked under the truck and saw that the gear shift cable was wobbling and the clip that held the cable to the bracket was on the ground. A plastic piece had broke off the cable and now I was screwed. I needed a whole new cable ($160 through a GM dealer). The cable was only available on-line (too long to wait) or at the GM Dealer (expensive). Autozone, carQuest, O'Reilly's/Murray's, NAPPA, Discount Auto Parts, Pep Boys, etc..nobody carries this part. I bought it from the dealer so my cheap transmission service turned into an extra $160. Lesson learned, don't mess with something I don't know anything about. I have done a lot of repair/maintenance work on my 2005 Silverado in the past year, but I fully intend to keep it to the basics. I can do my own brake service (new pads, rotors, calipers) and have fixed an electrical problem with the A/C-Heater fan but I will now on keep it to the routine maintenance schedule and pay the local repair shop to do the tough stuff.

Daylight Savings Time History. Spring Forward/Fall Back Time Change for Farmers?

What is the real story behind the Daylight Savings Time change? When does the time change? When is daylight savings time change? Was it originally designed so the farmers could work in the fields with more daylight? Was it for the revolutionary war? Why are we still doing it in 2012?
Did Benjamin Franklin really invent it? I always heard it was so the farmers could have more hours of sunlight to plow the fields, but what is the real truth?

Japan Earthquake Death Toll Rising. Meltdown at Nuclear Plant Disaster. Hundreds of Aftershocks.

A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean nearby Northeastern Japan The Disaster of the Japan earthquake and Tsunami continues to get worse. The Japanese people are going through a horrific time and the threat of a nuclear meltdown at the reactor worsens.
Hundreds of Japanese people are dead and thousands are missing/unaccounted for. How many people will die? How long will the recovery take? How much yen will the disaster cost? How many Americans are affected? Fukushima is a mess. Could this happen in California? What will happen to the Japanese stock market and government? Lots of questions and very little answers right now. Thoughts of 3 Mile Island come up as well as Chernobyl. The radiation could affect millions for many years. What is happening in Tokyo? Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the "enormously powerful" earthquake had caused "tremendous damage over a wide area." Six million households, more than 10% of the total in Japan, were without electricity, said Japan's ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki.

Silverado Tune-Up. Changing the Spark Plugs in the 2005 Chevy Truck.

I am approaching 100,000 miles in my 2005 Chevy Silverado so I figured it was time to do some maintenance. I bought a new serpentine belt, an air filter, and some new spark plugs. I have not installed the serpentine belt yet, but I did put in the filter and the plugs.
The filter is a piece of cake as long as you have the right size star bit. The plugs were a little more challenging but still pretty easy. I purchased Autolite double platinum APP605 plugs. They are really inexpensive but should do the job just fine. I have a 6 cylinder engine so there are a total of six plugs to change. There are three plugs on the left side of the engine and three on the right (driver's side). Change them one at a time, do not try to take all the plugs out at once as you may get confused on which plug wire goes to which plug. I needed a 5/8 inch spark plug socket to remove the plugs. Don't put too much pressure to remove them as you may just pull the threads right off. Don't remove spark plugs while your engine is hot (I waited a few hours since I just drove my truck about 30 miles). You WILL need a tool called a wire/boot puller to remove the rubber boot. Just twist the boot to the right & left a few times and then pull hard (from the boot) and it should come off. The gap on the plug needs to be adjusted to .60. I would recommend adjusting all the plug's gap before you even start so as to make sure you don't forget to do one later. Make sure to use some anti-seize on the threads so removing these will be really easy. Also, use some dielectric grease on the tip of the plug to keep water out and also to make it easy to remove for your next plug change.
The three plugs on the passenger's side were really easy to remove and install but the last plug closest to the cab on the driver's side was a bit more difficult to get to. I felt like a contortionist trying to get the right angle to get to the difficult plug. I did not change the wire set (probably should have at 100k). For Chevrolet, AC Delco are the original type of plugs and wires which are very high quality OEM parts. I used Autolite plugs from AutoZone, but I would recommend Bosch products if you want a higher quality of parts and don't mind spending the extra money.

Barry Bonds Perjury Charge. Will He Spend Time in Prison? HGH & Steroids with BALCO

Barry Bonds is about to go through some much needed "time in hell". The perjury case against him is going to give him some of the bad medicine that he dished out to everyone around him for many years. Yes, he was a stroke. He allegedly mistreated almost everyone who was close to him (wife, girlfriends, friends, teammates, doctors, assistants, fans,....) and this is pay back!
His defense is that his personal trainer misled him into believing he was taking flax-seed oil and arthritis cream. The HGH or steroids that he took helped him become a baseball Hall of Fame type player but it also helped him become a member of the Jerk Hall of Fame. Will Congress make him pay (with his life)? Will he get a slap on the wrist and time in a country club prison? Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson has been in prison for a while. Anderson better be getting millions of dollars from Bonds for keeping the silence. MLB, Bud Selig, the Giants, Barry Bonds fans, and BALCO are all getting a bit nervous right about now. Who knew, who else will get dragged under the bus, and what will the fall out be?

Best Places for Cheap Lasik Surgery. 20/20 Laser Vision in Both Eyes With Insurance.

Lasik eye surgery is a very popular option these days. I would love to get the surgery but do not want to pay the bill. Even with insurance, Lasik is expensive. What are the options to Lasik/Laser eye surgery? PRK, Zyoptix, IntraLase, Ablations, etc, are very confusing. My insurance plan offers a Lasik plan that covers $600 of the cost per eye.
It still would cost me somewhere close to $3000 to correct my vision (maybe). I would like to never have to wear contacts or glasses again, but even with the Lasik/Laser it is not fool proof. Is it painful? It may not make my vision 20/20. I don't think that cheap Lasik surgery really exists (do you really want a cheap doctor?). I will probably continue to wear contacts until the price of surgery comes down quite a bit. Lasik on a budget is probably not going to happen.

Refinance Your Home Mortgage with Best Rate! I Have Used both eLoan and Lendingtree

I have lived in my house for almost 12 years and originally had an 8% interest rate on my mortgage (1999 was tough for APR). About a year later, I refinanced through eLoans (or maybe it was Quicken loans??) and was able to get a 6.5% APR and reset the loan to a 30 year term. My total monthly payment went down considerably and I was able to drop the dreaded PMI so I was happy.
A year or so later, I again refinanced the mortgage and went through LendingTree.com. Comparing several loan offers is definitely the way to go. Your local bank probably will not be able to compete but it is still a good idea to ask them what APR they can offer you. The prime rate had fallen and I was able to get a 5.5% interest rate for a 20 year term. My monthly payments only went up a few dollars but I dropped about 8 years from my amortization. The refinancing process is a bit of a pain, but well worth it in the long run. I highly recommend that when you refinance, you subtract years instead of dollars. Don't worry so much about lowering your monthly payments because by subtracting years of the term you will save a ton of cash. The mortgage broker and bank really won't care what you choose.

Bug Out Bag for Surviving a Disaster. Survival Mode Gear for the End of the World.

What is a "bug out bag"? Who needs one? I stumbled upon a web site that was basically about survival during "all hell breaking loose". The main theme was about having a bug out bag that had the essentials to help you survive the first 72 hours of a major disaster.
The assumption is that the world as we know it would cease to exist and everyone would be out for themselves. Help in the form of police and military would not be able to respond to everyone. You need to be prepared and the bug out bag would help. The bag is basically a back pack filled with items such as batteries, water purifier, matches, knives, multi-purpose tools, etc. The bug out bag would have to only carry the utmost important items so as to keep it as light as possible. The term bug-out means that you need to leave right now--no time to think about what to grab. I don't have one but maybe it has some validity (without sounding too paranoid). What would happen if a major earthquake or an asteroid hit were to happen right NOW? How about a nuclear meltdown accident? Do you need to buy some anti-radiation pills? Maybe a major terrorism event. When you need to get out of Dodge in a hurry, a prepared bag of essentials is literally a life saver. The boy scout motto is "Be Prepared", maybe they know something we don't.

How to Win the Lottery. Secret to Scratch Off Lottery Tickets Revealed?

There was a column on a major news blog this past week that said a guy in Toronto, Canada had cracked the code to scratch off lottery tickets. He said that he could tell which tickets would be winners by looking at the pattern of numbers on the ticket.
This guy called the Ontario lottery agent and told them that he knew how to predict which tickets would win and also sent in some predicted winners--19 out of 20 predicted correctly (thus the tickets were then pulled from the store). This guy could have made a small fortune if he would have chosen to use his knowledge to scam the government. Did this really happen or is this guy a little delusionable? The best way to beat the system when it comes to scratch off lottery tickets is to NOT PLAY! If you play consistently, you WILL lose your money. There is no such thing as luck. Make you own good fortune, save your money.

10 Great Ronald Reagan Famous Quotes. Happy 100th Birthday President Reagan!

As the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan was in the right spot at the right time. America was changing as was the world. Reagan happened to be the perfect fit for the changing times. As he would be celebrating his 100th birthday this February, I think it is a good time to post some of his famous quotes.

1. “My fellow Americans. I’m pleased to announce that I’ve signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes.” – joking during a mike check before his Saturday radio broadcast

2. “I hope you’re all Republicans.” – Speaking to surgeons as he entered the operating room following a 1981 assassination attempt

4. “I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.” – Said during his presidency, 1981-1989

5. “Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.”

6. “Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.” – Remarks at a business conference, Los Angeles, March 2, 1977

7. “Thomas Jefferson once said, “We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.”

8. “I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” – during a 1984 presidential debate with Walter Mondale

9. “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” – The New York Times, September 22, 1980

10. “What makes him think a middle-aged actor, who’s played with a chimp, could have a future in politics?” – on Clint Eastwood’s bid to become mayor of Carmel

Happy Birthday President Reagan!

How Does a Zero Based Budget Work? Dave Ramsey Would be Proud of You!

You have all heard that a budget is needed to control expenses but what is this thing called a "zero based" budget?  Why not just use an old fashioned one?  Dave Ramsey always recommends the zero based budget so that every dollar has a name.  It is like you telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.  Essentially, a zero based budget is where you will end up with zero dollars left at the end of the month because you accounted for every last dollar.
You start with your total income and end with the remaining money going to a specific place. There is ZERO unaccounted for money. It is difficult to be accurate for the first several months but you will soon better at predicting your total expenses. Keep track of every expense (even the little ones) and you will be able to identify and reduce your frivolous expenditures. Visit Dave Ramsey's website for more information on the zero based budget.

What Temperature to Set the Thermostat at Night Depends on the Winter Low. Programmable Thermostat is the Answer.

How low you should set your thermostat in the winter depends upon your own situation. If you have very young children or a baby, you probably shouldn't go any lower than 64F. If you have laminate flooring, most recommend not to go below 62F. If you have an irritable wife, I wouldn't go below her comfort level...just kidding.
In our house, I set the thermostat temperature to 63F at night and the furnace rarely kicks on until morning (when the programmable thermostat goes to 67F). In the winter, I like it cold at night and have a hard time sleeping if it is warmer than normal. I like to cover up with a blanket and a comforter so I feel as snug as a bug in a rug. No electric blanket needed for me, just the lower energy bill makes me happy.

Happy Groundhog's Day 2015. Phil Can't See His Shadow in a Blizzard!

February 2nd is Groundhog's Day. Why exactly do we still do this?
Is it so every local news channel has two minutes of silly filler? Why not have a reality tv star day where if he/she see's their own ridiculousness, then their 15 minutes of fame disappears. I really don't understand how a groundhog seeing its shadow can predict whether or not winter will stay or spring is here. Of course there will be six more weeks of winter, it's only flipping February 2nd! What kind of silly activity will you plan for the special day? At least on St. Patrick's Day you can do something productive like drink green beer.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas. Budget Minded, Unique Presents.

That lovely holiday called Valentines day is soon approaching. How do I hate thee. All Valentines day has ever done for me (since I have been married) is get me in trouble. I don't believe in being "forced" into buying a gift or present that is supposed to say how much I love her. So you buy her flowers on a day when your expected to buy her flowers, big deal.
What does that say, that you comply well? A valentines day gift that is unique is the way to go. Buy her some Crest White-strips or something. How about a membership to Jenny Craig? Maybe a breast enhancement certificate. OK, before anyone gets too bent out of shape, I'M JUST KIDDING. Give her a big kiss, a dozen roses, and the credit card bill. Don't get me started on sweetest day...

Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Others are Experiencing a Real Blizzard. Midwest Snow Fall Might Be a Record.

The Snowstorm in Illinois right now is brutal. Whiteout conditions are being caused by 40mph winds and lots of snow. As I look out my window, it seems like this is the real deal. We skated by for many years of just missing the "so called BIG ONE". This might be the storm we talk about 30 years later.
I remember the big snow falls of the late 70's. 1977 through 1979 was a great time to be a kid. The snow was always deep and sometimes would drift up to the gutters of the house. We would build snow forts, tunnel a deep cave, and even build thrones out of the never ending snow. Snow days (school being canceled) was the icing on the cake! That meant an all day snow fest outside with the neighbor kids, followed up by hot chocolate (of course with marshmallows). Oh, to be a kid again! Chicago public schools just canceled school for tomorrow for the first time in over a decade. I would imagine most businesses will be closed at least until mid-morning as well. Go make a snow angel and act like a kid, it might just be a little fun.

Midwest Blizzard Conditions Bad for Business. Snowstorm Cost Millions of Dollars.

The snowstorm expected to hit the Midwest on Tuesday will be tough on the already frazzled Midwest economy. The state of Illinois is already in sad economic shape and this might set sales taxes back even further.
The East coast has been hammered all winter and many small business have had a tough time keeping the doors open. This just opens your eyes on the many risks of owning your own business. If the blizzard conditions do hit, it may hamper the economy for several days. Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and other large mid-western cities will be a mess. I can see that snow removal might even be a huge campaigning strategy for the candidates for mayor of Chicago (like it was in the late 70's). Snow go away.

Should I Pay Off the Mortgage Early or Invest?

This has always been a very tough question to answer. Is debt freedom your dream? Many people recommend that you never pay your mortgage off early because of the low interest rates and tax deductions. Tons of people (very popular in California) are now going with 40 year mortgages and never plan to pay them off. Others love to be 100% debt free for peace of mind and so they can focus their money on other things.

I believe that once you are free from all your other debt, you should then focus on the mortgage. Many people feel that mortgages are NORMAL and that they will always have one. Don't buy more home than you can afford and you will find out that you should be able to pay off your mortgage 3x faster than scheduled. You will still have time to invest once the mortgage is torched.

The Stock market can be risky, but a paid off home is yours to keep. If you have a 5.5% mortgage, by paying it off early you are effectively getting a 5.5% return on the extra payments. A guaranteed 5.5% is pretty good in these tough economic times. The mortgage interest is tax deductible (only if you itemize) but it is NOT worth paying the bank the extra interest. You lose, the bank wins.

Want to retire early? A paid off home is a good start! If you have a aid off home, you know exactly what you have (No more payments and 100% home equity), but with the stock market (or any other investment) you never really know what will happen. You may lose almost everything in the rare event of a total collapse. You should still invest, but only get intense about it after your home is paid off. Is this the Maximum Potential Strategy---Probably not, but it is much safer and might allow you to sleep better.

Dave Ramsey's Seven Baby Steps

>

THE 7 BABY STEPS

Following Dave Ramsey's Plan:

Step 1
$1000 in Starter Emergency Fund.
Save $1000 in an emergency fund. This money is for Emergency Use ONLY. Not for buying Christmas presents, new tires, etc...you need to expect those expenses. Put this money in a secure place but NOT in your checking account.

Step 2 Pay off all debt using the "Debt Snowball" (Except the house)
Pay off your debt SMALLEST to largest-regardless of the interest rate. Paying off the small ones will give you maximum motivation to keep you going strong throughout this debt elimination process. The interest rate difference will not really amount to much in the long run and if you were good at math you wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

Step 3 Finish Full Emergency Fund (3-6 months living expenses)
Save 3-6 months of living expenses. This is in case of a big emergency such as a job loss. For most people, 3-6 months of bare bones expenses will probably be between $10,000 to $20,000. This step takes a while and you need to be careful not to get antsy and jump ahead.

Step 4 Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement savings
(Steps 4, 5, & 6 can be done at the same time)
Save for your retirement. This is one area that is hard to catch up on, so start getting intense unless you plan on working until you are quite old.

Step 5 College Funding
Helping your children with college expenses is a great way to ensure they don't repeat your debt mistakes. Try to instill a debt free lifestyle with your children by helping them graduate debt free! I recommend that they help pay for part of their college expenses.

Step 6 Pay off the House!
My Favorite Step! How great will it be to be 100% DEBT FREE, including the house? Some people will scoff at the notion of funneling extra payments to your mortgage because of the tax advantage (yea, right) and the cheap interest rate. Stay strong and think of all the ways you can use the "mortgage money" once you are debt free.

Step 7 Build wealth and Give
Continue building your retirement wealth. Be generous. Teach others to become debt free. You have WON!

Rising death toll in Egypt protests: Cairo 25; Suez 38; Alexandria 36 - Al Jazeera

Only a matter of time now.. Husni Mubarak WILL step down. Thugs and looters who have been caught by civilians have been found carrying central security ID cards! The Israeli embassy in Cairo is now completely empty. There is no more Israeli flag hanging in Cairo. Omar Suleiman has close ties to Mossad, Shin Bet and Aman (military intel). His friends are Israeli spy chiefs. The Egyptians are fighting for the rule of freedom and equality - not a collaboration of dictators, Mubarak and Suleiman.
Looters broke into museum, destroyed two Pharaonic mummies late Friday, says nation's top archaeologist. Crazy times.

Egypt's Uprising Affects the U.S. Stock Market. Oil Prices May Keep Going Up

Worldwide stocks sank the most since November, crude oil prices posted the largest jump since 2009 and the dollar rose versus the euro after protesters challenged Egyptian President 30-year rule.  Egypt’s dollar bonds sank, pushing yields to a record.  The turmoil in Egypt is affecting the United States and the global economy in a significant way.
This is just the beginning and the end result may be devastating.  The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean and Red Sea.  It is located in Egypt.and it critical in the transportation of one million barrels of oil each day to Europe and other developed economies.  Egypt's cell phone service has since been restored after the government blocked it along with the internet in an attempt to try to stop the uprising, but communication was still spotty. The U.S. stock market dumped on Friday due to the uprising. Hosni Mubarak set a curfew that was ignored and the violence continued. Oil prices may continue to rise and we all know how that affects our wallets. Let's all hope the protesters calm down and get on with their life. The Middle East economy is critical to the U.S. economy and the global stock market. Cairo, please chill out.

My Toshiba Satellite A135 Laptop Review. Best Price for a Budget Notebook Computer

I own a Toshiba A135 laptop that I have had for several years. I use it almost exclusively for my blogging and computer needs. A quick review of the features, pros, and cons. It is like most budget series laptops in that it does what it is supposed to do just without all the bells and whistles. No webcam, minimal ram (2GB ram), and sufficient hard drive space.
My favorite thing about my Toshiba that most other laptops don't have is that it has a volume control dial that makes turning up/down the sound really easy. Nothing much else out of the ordinary. The cons are that the fan is really loud and the keyboard keys seem to pop off easily. I am missing two keys and several others come off easily. Overall, I would recommend a Toshiba brand to anyone looking for a quality Laptop Computer.

Review of TomTom ONE XL GPS. Best features and Price. U.S. & Canada

I bought a refurbished TomTom One XL Gps from Amazon last year and forgot to do a review. It has a 4.3" screen, text to speech, and United States maps (and maybe Canada?). I don't use a GPS very often but it is great for vacations and the occasional work travel.
It took me a little while to fully trust the GPS (I was still printing out mapquest AND bringing the GPS), but now I know it will get me there. It was a great price at the time ($88) so I decided to purchase it. The first unit I received was DOA, it would not find any satellites. I returned it and received a replacement that worked. I would recommend TomTom to anyone who wants a quality, easy to use GPS. I really have no desire for the weather and traffic features....yet.

2005 Chevy Silverado Truck Tires are Not Cheap! Best Price on New Tires Online

It is time to buy new tires for my 2005 Chevy Silverado and I am finding that they are pretty expensive.  This is the first set of tires I will replace for the Silverado (92,000 miles) and did not realize that it will probably cost around $700-$800 for a mid-level set of four tires.  I guess I was used to the small car that I could always find a great deal on tires for $50 a tire.
I looked online at quite a few different tire stores and nothing really jumps out a clear favorite except DiscountTire.com.  They had the best prices on tires but I really would rather buy them local at a tire store (chain-store) and have them installed right then.  Walmart did not really have too good of prices for the Cheverolet Silverado either.  I guess I should be thankful that my original set of tires has lasted this many miles.  I didn't rotate them very often but they do have some uneven wear.

Vitamin B12 shots for weight loss, healthy skin, reducing stress, and energy boosters might be the Future of Health.

Is the B12 shot the next great thing in health? There are possibly many great advantages to the b12 shot. Some will say that the B12 will be very beneficial with weight loss, healthy skin, reducing stress, and an energy booster. I am currently doing my own research and will decide if it is right for me.
A vitamin and dietary supplement is more important as you get older but you need to consider if it is an expensive waste or if it really helps your health. Ask your doctor if it is a good idea to get the shot. It may play a role in the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels and is required for proper red blood cell formation. The long lasting energy without all the caffeine is a plus.  I don't currently take any vitamins but I am starting to think I should make sure I take better care of my body.  Maybe the vitamins are nothing more than expensive pee.

Panama City Beach Florida Gulf Vacation. Get a Great Deal on Hotels, Condo, House, Rentals for Spring Break

A few years ago we took a vacation in Panama City Beach. It was Spring Break. The College kids were having fun and so were we! We stayed at a nice hotel/resort right on the beach but it was a bit farther west of all the college kids. The sun was warm, beer was cold and the water was a bit chilly.
There was a nice new outdoor mall with lots of outlet type stores and good restaurants close by. Two or three night in Panama Beach is enough to see it all then head on over to Disney World. The Florida Gulf-Coast is nice, but you can't beat the Magic Kingdom!

Taco Bell Lawsuit Over Beef. Fast Food Meat is Really Healthy...Not

Who really eats at Taco Bell if they are concerned about the quality of their beef? Come on, Taco bell has served mystery taco meat for many years. 65% mystery and 35% beef, what would you expect? What about White Castle, McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, etc...the meat tastes like chicken.
Grade A beef or Grade A bull? Fast food is not healthy...is that a headline? The filler may be healthier than the beef. California residents needs to understand that 39 cent tacos are gonna be questionable. Among the ingredients in Taco Bell's taco meat filling are soybean oil (an anti-dusting agent), silicon dioxide (an anti-caking agent) and the common food additives maltodextrin and soy lecithin. Taco Bell is fighting the lawsuit by creating youtube videos. I guess the same peple who eat the cheap burritos also watch youtube quite often. Where else would the next generation of fat kids come from?

CSL Plama Donate. Donating Plasma for Money is a Cash Blood

The economy falls, joblessness rises, and CSL plasma donating (selling) is the hottest trend to make money. Sad state of affairs. Is this any different than being a prostitute? Selling your body (plasma) for money is a low blow. How about selling a few spare organs? How much money do the places pay for plasma?
Is it safe to give very often? I would feel like a real loser if I started selling CSL plasma because it is like the last resort (except maybe selling sperm).

Canada Visa to Enter the Country. Travel, Live, Work Permit Application. No Disney World/Epcot There.

If you want to travel to Canada to work or just visit, you must have a passport/Visa. I read where Canada was looking for Thousands of Filipino workers. Why all the hiring and low unemployment in Canada? Alberta is the main province that needs the workers in the oil and gas industry. Why Filipino?
Americans are pretty close by, you know. If you want to live or work in Canada, have at it. This reminds me of Epcot at Disney World. I believe that each "country" at Epcot hires in thousands of people from that country. Does Disney pay them minimum wage & housing? What would it take to make you leave your country to work at an amusement park (many in not very glamorous positions)? Just Rambling here....

NFL Lockout Talk is Insane. Football is King in America. The Fan is Held Hostage.

I love NFL football. America loves football. Owners of NFL teams have become billionaires and the players have become multi-millionaires. Most games come down to the final minutes and any team can win. The only person who will lose if there is a lockout is the FAN. Greed is a powerful and destructive force that ultimately destroys everything that it controls. Will the NFL Draft be held?
The College players may have to wait to become rich. Since the NFL falls under a protective anti-trust law, I am hoping that congress will step in and tell the owners & players that they must continue under the current structure (16 real games) unless the two sides can agree to a revised schedule. Otherwise, no lockout allowed. Take that and shove it (do you realize the the NFL is actually tax-exempt??).

Transforming Debt to Wealth System by John Commuta. Why Many Misunderstand it as a Scam.

I get a lot of inquiries about the John Cummuta debt system where people assume it is a scam. The Transforming Debt into Wealth title is a large contributor to the scam assumption. People can't understand how their debt magically changes into wealth. Another reason for the scam thoughts is because of the radio commercial where a guy says that he paid off his 30 year mortgage in two and a half years.
That doesn't pass the sniff test. The "magically changing debt into wealth" and the pay off a 30 year mortgage in two and a half years are NOT really what Cummuta is saying, but that is what most listeners think they are hearing. The transforming debt into wealth is nothing more than the gradual process of ..being in debt...paying off the debt...spending less than you earn...now starting to build wealth. It doesn't mean you can make your $30,000 of debt work FOR you to make you rich. I agree that it is a rather confusing title. Next, the pay off the mortgage statement is misleading as well. I am almost certain that the guy in the commercial is saying he paid of his (originally 30yr) mortgage just 2 and a half years after he started Cummuta's program. What he doesn't say is that he was over 10 years into his mortgage (or 12...or 15). As I have said before in this blog, the system does work (because it has to). It is a complex way of telling you to stop wasting money and save it. Pay off your old debt, acquire no new debt, and spend less than you earn (therefore you have no choice but to gain wealth).
